Martha (Campbell) Brown, Circa 1900

Martha (Campbell) Brown (1832?-1907) was born in County Antrim, Ireland, in February of 1832 or 1834.  Martha married James Brown in Ballymena Parish, Country Antrim, in 1853.   Despite the fact that Martha’s father was a schoolmaster, she may have been illiterate as she placed a mark on her marriage certificate instead of using a signature.  Martha and James immigrated to Ohio in 1861 and six years later moved to Little Falls, Minnesota.  Martha and James, had eleven children – Dana H., Ethan Sanford, Alfred S., Elias F., James A., Mattie (Martha), Jennie, Mary, John, William and Sadie.  One of their children, Elias F., was featured in a previous Collections Carousel post (http://morrisoncountyhistory.org/?p=2070).

The manufacturer’s mark on the back of the photograph indicates that the photo was taken at the C. C. Neal Art Gallery (http://morrisoncountyhistory.org/history/?page_id=449) of Little Falls, Minnesota.
