Anna Marie Newman, looking elegant in her dark fur-trimmed coat and plumed hat, was the daughter of Peter Henry and Gertrude (Dueppen) Newman. Born in Pierz, Minnesota, on May 8, 1883, Anna was one of Peter and Gertrude’s fourteen children, only eight of whom survived to adulthood. Anna’s parents homesteaded in Pierz for a short time and then moved to Little Falls, Minnesota, where Peter earned a reputation as a leading horsedealer in the area. Anna married her first husband, Charles Sylvester, on January 6, 1903, in Little Falls. In 1910, after Anna and Charles had divorced, she married Harry Washington Carlile. Anna and Henry had three children.
