Morrison County has some of the most fascinating history and characters. One of those characters was Vernon Pick, who ran the old Two Rivers Mill site as a sustainable homestead and business prior to the site being destroyed by fire. After that, he and his wife went out west on a vacation and he discovered a giant uranium mine that made him very wealthy.
Pick’s story is one of those American Dream fantasies that so many people have that it was covered in LIFE magazine and many newspapers of the day. What didn’t get covered was the history of the Two Rivers Mill in relation to Pick’s story. That’s what we’ve done with our newest booklet, “Vernon Pick: Two Rivers Mill to Delta Uranium Mine” by Mary Warner.
We first published this article in serial form in the Morrison County Historical Society newsletter (2021, Issues 3 and 4, and 2022, Issue 1) that was sent to MCHS members. The story was then pulled together in booklet form, with more images added to the story. We present the online version here (PDF format), but a print version is available for purchase at The Charles A. Weyerhaeuser Memorial Museum or in our online shop.
