Carved goat – This hand-carved goat was made by Theodore Martell of Cushing, Minnesota. Martell was elected to the office of Morrison County Commissioner in the fall of 1964, serving the First District. He died in June 1967 while still holding office. He was born in Eureka, South Dakota, on April 29, 1894. After graduating from North Dakota State University, he served as a county agent in the state and also taught agriculture in North Dakota, Nebraska and Minnesota. He was married to Rachel Elmer. – MCHS Collections, #2007.19.7
Hi, Barbara – I believe these are the only carvings of his we have in the collection. If you plan to visit the Weyerhaeuser Museum sometime and want to see them, give us a call a day ahead of time and we’ll retrieve them from the Collections Room.
I remember my grandfather Theodore Martell sitting for hours carving all sorts of animals – these are the only photos I have found of his work.
