One of the recent additions to the photograph collection at the Morrison County Historical Society (MCHS) are thirteen photographs from what appears to have been a court case between Sarah Gibson and the Mississippi and Rum River Boom Company. The photographs show views of the Mississippi River and date from a relatively short time period – April 1900 to 16 July 1901. All of the photographs were taken either by Nelson Studio or Solem’s Studio, both of Little Falls, Minnesota.
Sarah Gibson (1883-1958) was born in Perham, Minnesota, on April 11, 1883. When she was barely a month old, Sarah moved to Little Falls, Minnesota, with her parents, Edmund and Elizabeth (Mann) Rothwell. Edmund operated a sawmill on the east side of the Mississippi River, north of downtown Little Falls, with Nehemiah P. Clark of St. Cloud, Minnesota. On June 25, 1902, Sarah married Charles Guernon. Charles and Sarah had four children. Four years after Charles died, on August 8, 1936, Sarah married Warren Gibson. Warren had two children from his first marriage. According to a Works Progress Administration biography (WPA #606, Biography of Mr. & Mrs. Gibson) on Sarah Gibson and her husband, Sarah was a charter member and director of MCHS.
