Upcoming Genealogical Society Events

2023-2024
Morrison County Genealogy Society
and the St. Cloud Area Genealogists
Meeting Speakers

The Morrison County Genealogy group has been fortunate to co-partner with the St Cloud Area Genealogists to bring speakers from far away to present. It has allowed both organizations access to speakers we could not normally afford because of distance and cost.

The topics have been great!  Mark your calendar with the following dates to attend.

If you can not, note that one other benefit we have is to view the presentations online beyond the night the speaker presents as a benefit for members of both organizations and registered paid guests.

It’s a win-win for all!

Sept. 19, 2023:
Judy G. Russell, “Finding the Law”

Time and time again, we’re told as genealogists that we need to look at records in the context of the law at the time and in the place where the records were created. But this is easier said than done! With 50 states and the federal government all passing laws, how do we find the laws we need? Judy G. Russell, The Legal Genealogist®, will address that challenge when she presents the webinar “Finding the Law” to our organization on Tuesday, Sept. 19, at 7 p.m. at the Stearns History Museum, 235 33rd Ave S., St. Cloud. The presentation will also be available online and will be recorded for members of MCGS & SCAG and registered paid guests.

Oct. 17, 2023:
Carolyn Sowinski, “Frozen on the Minnesota Prairie”

The October presenter, Carolyn Sowinski, is going to be in person! She was going to try to schedule the presentations on her book in batches and she successfully scheduled four in August and four in October (ours being one) that justified a visit from the East Coast to Minnesota. So we’ll have another hybrid presentation to look forward to. Let anyone you know who has been missing our in-person sessions to mark their calendars to come.

Many genealogists have not considered how adverse weather conditions affected their ancestors and the communities in which they lived.

How could a researcher find information regarding weather and its effects from decades ago?

Kandiyohi County native Carolyn Mankell Sowinski will share her experience in a book talk hosted by the Morrison County Genealogy Society and St. Cloud Area Genealogists, Inc. Tuesday, October 17, 2023 at 7 p.m. again at Stearns History Museum (235 33 rd Ave S., St. Cloud). In Sowinski’s sixth book, The Great Storm: Minnesota’s Victims in the Blizzard of January 7, 1873, she identifies 84 people from 31 counties in the state who died in this three-day storm. These victims included men, women and children; Civil War veterans and recent immigrants; homesteaders and villagers. Sowinski will read excerpts about the storm, highlight historic documents about the victims and share some of her approaches to genealogical research.

The presentation will also be available online and will be recorded for members of MCGS & SCAG and registered guests. Books will be for sale at the event and can be purchased with cash or a check.

Nov. 21, 2023:
