| Part of our mission at the Morrison County Historical Society is educating the public about county history. We've found that one of the best ways we can do this is through our publications, which include our quarterly newsletter, and several books we've published over the years. |
| Quarterly Newsletter |
| Chock full of county history, MCHS' quarterly newsletter is one you'll want to keep. That's what we've heard from satisfied members, anyway. The newsletter is a benefit to MCHS members and keeps them apprised of what's happening at the Weyerhaeuser Museum. For information on membership so that you can start receiving our newsletter, go to our Home page. |

| A Big Hearted Paleface
Man: Nathan Richardson & the History of Morrison County,
Minnesota is the newest of the Morrison County Historical
Society's publishing endeavors. It's been called a textbook of sorts,
yet the story of Nathan Richardson and the earliest history of Morrison
County is too approachable and fascinating to be classified solely
along these lines. Think of it as a reference book that shows not only
how a specific county was built, but how, as the process was repeated
from community to community, the nation was built. Here's a review of the book by Linda Peavy & Ursula Smith, esteemed authors of The Gold Rush Widows of Little Falls, Women in Waiting, Frontier Children, and Pioneer Women: Mary Warner's A Big Hearted Paleface Man provides readers with the first comprehensive biography of Nathan Richardson, arguably the most influential figure in the early history of Little Falls, Minnesota - and of Morrison County as well. While other founding fathers gave up and pushed westward in search of brighter prospects, Richardson stayed the course, never losing faith in the region's potential and giving over fifty years of his life to promoting the town he helped establish. Warner's engaging, reader-friendly work humanizes this legendary figure by offering a rare glimpse into his personal life and detailing his foibles and failings as well as his many political and professional accomplishments. Entrepreneur and opportunist, land baron and "boomer," mediator in Indian-settler disputes, inventor and archaeologist; research, writer, historian, Nathan Richardson left his mark on all he touched. His two histories of early life in Little Falls and Morrison County have been the starting point for all subsequent studies of the area. Though heretofore accessible only through archival research, both these invaluable chronicles may now be found within the covers of a single volume. An eye-catching jacket, gracious layout, vintage photographs, color plates, and a sample of Richardson's own pencil sketches make this book as aesthetically pleasing as it is historically sound. Endnotes, bibliography, and a comprehensive index further enhance this ambitious, well-documented work. All in all, A Big Hearted Paleface Man is a must-read for anyone interested in the history of the area Nathan Richardson called home. Interested in ordering a copy? | Written originally in 2000 to serve
as a local history curriculum, Little Falls on the Big River:
A History of Little Falls, Minnesota for Kids was reprinted
in 2001 for public consumption due to popular demand. Don't let the
title fool you. Adults enjoy this handy book as much as kids do. It
presents the history of Little Falls in easy-to-digest sections, and
includes sidebars with suggested activities for further local history
study. The project to create a history curriculum originated with the Little Falls Heritage Preservation Commission (HPC), which received a grant from the Minnesota Historical Society in order to produce the book for the Little Falls School District. The Morrison County Historical Society was awarded the contract, and Historical Society staff, including Ann Marie Johnson, Jan Warner, and Mary Warner, set to work, completing the project within eight months. The second edition of the book was financed with assistance from the Little Falls Lions Club. Memories of Morrison County, Minnesota and the USA became the

supporter of theater and speech. To accompany Mr. Martin's poetry,
several local artists have illustrated Voices of Yesterday
