Frank Smuda's Pocket Watch, circa 1978

This silver pocket watch belonged to Frank Smuda (1911-1998) of Pike Creek Township, Morrison County, Minnesota.  The watch has an elaborate embossed train design on the front cover of the two-inch diameter  case.  Frank was born to Peter and Tillie Smuda on April 2, 1911, and lived on the family farm his entire life.  Frank served in the United States Army during World War II and then worked for the Hennepin Paper Company in Little Falls, Minnesota.  After retiring in 1976, Frank worked with his family running Smuda’s Zoo.

  1. Thanks Ann Marie for the article and photos on Uncle Frankie’s pocket watch. Ben and Alvina were happy about seeing and reading this article. So glad the watch is in good hands and will be preserved for many years to come.

  2. Hello! While going thru a childhood box, I happened across a carved wooden souvenir from Smuda’s Zoo. Just wondering if there is a family member, or if the history center would be interested in having it.

  3. Angie – Yes, there is still a family member left from the Smuda’s Zoo. Alvina Smuda, my sister-in-law, is 80 years old and still talks about the “Zoo Days”. Except for the knees, is in good health and still living in the same house. She would love to see what you have and asks if you would send it to the Weyerhaeuser Museum for safe keeping. They will left her know when it arrives so she can see it. Thanks so much for taking the time to get in touch.
